L'Islande - Reykjavik (Partie 1) // Iceland - Reykjavik (Part 1)

Just back a few days ago from my magical trip to Iceland it's finally time to share all these moments of happiness.

In November 2012 I had the opportunity to come to Reykjavik during a weekend for the "Iceland Airwaves Music Festival". And I was delighted with this city because everything is really different from what I could see. In a short weekend I could not visit anymore so when a few months ago this destination became a future trip over 8 days it was obvious that I wanted to see much more than the capital. Months to dream and especially to do research about things to do because Iceland is such a unique destination ! I booked my tickets in May 2017 with a departure from London Heathrow Terminal 2 with Icelandair http://www.icelandair.co.uk and a return from Keflavik Airport to Bristol with Easyjet https: // www .easyjet.com / en /

Everything went well and especially in 2:40 flight Iceland is really close to UK.

Well arrived and even quite late in this city coup de coeur, I stayed during these 8 days in an Airbnb very close to the city center. The Icelandic apartment is well heated and cute like anything. Immediately, I feel that I am in a Nordic country that the air is pure and dry and especially that the sun wakes up around 11:00 am to go to sleep a little before 16:00. So I have to make the most of these times to see Reykjavik again. I resume my benchmarks immediately and I realize that since 2012 this city has changed.

The tourists are more numerous as well as the buildings around the port and in the city center. The prices have increased a lot and especially I have the impression that there is an American influence in the city because we can see KFC, pizzerias, restaurants burgers ... It's amazing but believe me I always find this city so beautiful.

Here I am to walk the streets and to lose myself because there are places that I want to see again such as: Lake Tjörnin who has this period is even more beautiful especially in this winter period because it is ice cold. I wandered all the way and the colors of this sky with the rising sun was magic.

There is also this modern and so enigmatic Hallgrímskirkka church which is at the top of the shopping street. It is so impressive that it almost makes you dizzy, but its unique architecture is worth the effort. I was able to go inside and discover a little bit of history. It is very recent because it opened in 1986 and its height of 74.50 meters makes it the highest church in his country.

Then I enjoyed walking the streets of Reykjavik stopping in the shops to warm me a little bit take pictures of some houses and even graffiti that are as beautiful as those in Bristol.

This city is a real open-air museum.

The hunger is felt and eat as much local testing a chain of Icelandic burger Aktu Taktu http://aktutaktu.is And understanding nothing in Icelandic (the Japanese language seemed simpler), I had a fried chicken burger formula and coke. Well it was not bad at all!

And then go around the city without going through the "Sólfar - Sun Voyager" famous stainless steel sculpture created by the artist Jón Gunnar Árnarsson in 1990 would be a shame not to see it so much it is part of Icelandic art . This sculpture represents a Viking ship but according to the artist it looks more like a dream machine. I especially love it overlooking the beautiful bay of Reykjavik facing the mountains. A few minutes walk from the Sun Voyager, there is the Harpa Conference Hall which is of majestic beauty. And yet, I saw some buildings with special architectures and unique but then the Harpa is for me one of the most beautiful. I find it so original and especially the way it was built and its colors that change with the sun. It opened in 2011 and comes from a genius alliance between a Danish architect and an Icelandic company. It is today considered one of the most important buildings in Reykjavik because it is above all a place of culture, of music that hosts an opera as well as a festival. And its shops inside are really nice !!

If there is one place I really liked it is The National Museum of Iceland
http://www.thjodminjasafn.is/english/

I was lucky that the museum was just a few minutes walk from my Airbnb and I think this place is really nice for know a little more about the history of the country. I paid the entrance around £15 and loved the audio guide concept on my phone thanks to the free wifi. I took the time about 2 hours to explore the museum on 3 floors. Everything is clearly explained since the creation of the country until today. And above all, I thought it was a very complete museum because you can see many objects including this typical wooden house (above) and these slippers in fish skins (above).
