For those who have followed me for a while you know that traveling is one of my passions and living abroad is obviously the best experience to discover a culture and all that surrounds it. The current situation encourages me to observe more and to be curious about all these towns and villages near Bristol.
So here I am sharing a day full of discovery in Wales between Usk and Caerlon !
Pour ceux qui me suivent depuis un moment, vous savez que voyager est l'une de mes passions et vivre à l'étranger est bien évidement la meilleure des expériences pour découvrir une culture et tout ce qui l'entoure. La situation actuelle m'encourage plus à observer et à être de plus en plus curieuse de toutes ces villes et villages proches de Bristol.
Me voici donc à vous partager une journée riche en découverte au Pays de Galle entre Usk et Caerlon !

QUELQUES INFOS SUR LA VILLE DE USK
Usk belongs to the nation of Wales and the county of Monmouthshire it has also 2318 people living in the city. From Bristol it takes around 40 minutes by car and the journey is fun to do especially through this magnificent bridge so famous which is called "Prince of Wales Bridge" it's the separation between England and Wales crossing the River Severn. The access to the bridge is free and its architecture is just amazing !!
Pour info Usk appartient à la nation Wales et au comté de Monmouthshire, elle compte 2318 habitants. Depuis Bristol, il faut environ 40 min en voiture et le trajet est sympa à faire surtout en passant par ce magnifique pont si célèbre qui s'appelle "Prince of Wales Bridge" qui est un viaduc entre l'Angleterre et le Pays de Galles franchissant la rivière Severn. L'accès au pont est gratuit et son architecture est juste incroyable !!

I started my day of sightseeing by going to discover an art gallery Gallery at Home https://www.galleryathome.co.uk founded by Sonia Pang who wanted to recreate a space, a community where the artists are chosen with care. It is such a pleasant place to enjoy some time by drinking a coffee or a tea and, eating a treat while discovering pieces of art.
The place is really charming and Sonia is a great host with whom it is great to talk to. I felt really good in the gallery, the light that reigned there, the works of art is so well highlighted ... the vibe there reminds me my trips to Iceland and Japan.

J'ai commencé ma journée de visites en allant à la découverte d'une galerie d'art "Gallery at Home" https://www.galleryathome.co.uk fondé par Sonia Pang qui a souhaité recréer un espace, une communauté où les artistes sont choisis avec soin. C'est un lieu si agréable pour se poser, boire un café, un thé et manger une douceur tout en découvrant des pièces d'art.
L'endroit est vraiment charmant et Sonia est une super hôte avec qui il est chouette de parler, je me suis sentit vraiment bien dans sa galerie, la lumière qui y régnait, les oeuvres d'art si bien mises en valeur...me rappelaient mes voyages en Islande et au Japon.

While going to downtown Usk I had the opportunity to discover a Gin distillery and for lovers of this drink ... it will definitely be your paradise !
Warmly welcomed by Christos Kyriakidis who is the founder I enjoyed this break to learn more about this alcohol. Open since 2018 this distillery offers a local Gin mixing several plants which makes it even tastier.
This place is also unique because in addition to coming and enjoying a moment to drink a Gin at certain times, the founder had this great idea to create special events such as:
- A tasting session.
- A masterclass where you can make your own Gin and take it home.
- Join the VIP club (£ 30 per month) which allows you to benefit from many advantages such as receiving a bottle of Gin each month.
En allant dans le centre-ville de Usk, j'ai eu l'opportunité de découvrir une distillerie de Gin et pour les amateurs de cette boisson...ce sera définitivement votre paradis !
Accueillie chaleuresement par Christos Kyriakidis qui en est le fondateur, j'ai apprécié cette pause pour en connaitre davantage sur cet alcool. Ouvert depuis 2018, cette distillerie propose un Gin local mélangeant plusieurs plantes ce qui le rend encore plus savoureux.
Cet endroit est aussi unique car en plus de venir et de profiter d'un moment pour boire un Gin à certaines heures, le fondateur a eu cette chouette idée de créer des événements spéciaux comme :
- Une session de dégustation,
- Une masterclass où l'on peut fabriquer son propre Gin et le ramener chez soi,
- Adhérer au club VIP (£30 par mois) qui permet de bénéficier de nombreux avantages comme recevoir chaque mois une bouteille de Gin.

After this busy morning I was able to sit down for lunch in this restaurant open since November 2018 which is also a bar and a deli that sells beautiful and good Italian products among other things. Located right in the city center of Usk this place is really charming and its food is delicious. I advise you to reserve your table before. The staff were very welcoming and the atmosphere so warm. I loved eating on the outdoor and covered terrace.
I wanted to test the suggestions of the day and I loved it !! I strongly recommend the truffle and parmesan fries ;-)
Après cette matinée bien chargée, j'ai pu me poser un peu pour déjeuner dans ce restaurant ouvert depuis Novembre 2018 qui est aussi un bar et un déli qui vend de beaux et bons produits italiens entre autre. Situé en plein centre ville de Usk, cet endroit est vraiment charmant et sa cuisine est délicieuse . Je vous conseille de réserver votre table avant. Le personnel était très accueillant et l'ambiance si chaleureuse. J'ai adoré manger en terrace extérieure et couverte.
J'ai voulu tester les suggestions du jour et j'ai adoré !! Je vous conseille fortement les frites aux truffes et au parmesan ;-)
Also just after lunch I took the time to have a digestive walk around the town...

QUELQUES INFORMATIONS SUR LA VILLE DE CAERLEON
Caerleon is located in the south of Wales northwest of the town of Newport, of which it is now a suburb. The Usk River flows through the city before flowing into the Severn Estuary. It is also a historic city linked to the Roman period and today it is an important archaeological site which testifies to the importance of the city but also to its wealth.
Caerleon est située au sud du pays de Galles, au nord-ouest de la ville de Newport dont elle constitue aujourd'hui un faubourg. La rivière Usk traverse la ville, avant d'aller se jeter dans l'estuaire de la Severn. C'est aussi une ville historique liée à la période Romaine et c'est aujourd'hui un site archéologique important qui témoigne de l'importance de la ville mais aussi de sa richesse.

And that's good because I was able to visit the Roman Legionary Museum of Caerleon which has a collection of remains found on its archaeological site.
This museum (whose the entry is free and you have to book your ticket online before coming) allowed me to learn more about the life of the Romans and especially to rediscover all these incredible things that they were able to achieve. All the pieces in the museum were found on site and moreover one can see one of the great collections of precious stones from the Roman Empire.
I loved this moment in history and in addition one of the staff member was able to tell me in detail some anecdotes. Also normally you can discover Roman bath but they were closed and I really enjoyed the Roman Garden so you can imagine how it was before.
With the current period of the Covid I strongly invite you to plan your visit by consulting the website.
Et cela tombe bien car j'ai pu visiter le Musée Légionnaire Romain de Caerleon qui possède une collection des vestiges trouvés sur son site archéologique.
Ce musée (dont l'entrée est gratuite et aussi, il faut réserver votre ticket en ligne avant de vous y rendre) m'a permit d'en apprendre plus sur la vie des Romains et surtout de redécouvrir toutes ces choses incroyables qu'ils ont été capables de réaliser. Toutes les pièces au sein du musée ont été retrouvées sur place et d'ailleurs, on peut y voir l'une des grandes collections de pierres précieuses de l'Empire Romain.
J'ai adoré ce moment dans l'histoire et en plus, un des membres du staff a pu me raconter en détails quelques anecdotes. Aussi, en temps normal, on peut découvrir des bains romains mais ils étaient fermés. J'ai beaucoup aimé cette reconstitution d'un jardin romain !
Avec la période actuelle du Covid, je vous invite fortement à planifier votre visite en consultant le site Internet.
And few minutes by walk to the museum you can't miss the Caerleon Amphitheatre who is open to the public and free. Built around AD 90 to entertain the legionaries stationed at the fort of Caerleon (Isca), this impressive amphitheater was the Roman equivalent of today’s multiplex cinema. Wooden benches provided seating for up to 6,000 spectators, who would gather to watch bloodthirsty displays featuring gladiatorial combat and exotic wild animals.
I never seen a place like this in such a very good condition.
Et à quelques minutes à pieds du musée, il est impossible de rater l'amphithéâtre de Caerleon qui est ouvert au public et qui est gratuit. Construit vers 90 après JC pour divertir les légionnaires stationnés au fort de Caerleon (Isca), cet impressionnant amphithéâtre était l'équivalent romain du multiplexe d'aujourd'hui. Des bancs en bois pouvaient accueillir jusqu'à 6000 spectateurs, qui se rassemblaient pour assister à des expositions sanguinaires mettant en vedette des combats de gladiateurs et des animaux sauvages exotiques.
Je n'ai jamais vu d'endroit pareil aussi bien conservé.

And here's one place that I highly recommend you to do when it gets reopened after renovations is the Newport Transporter Bridge which is simply a transporter bridge that crosses the Usk River to the town of Newport. It is among the 10 bridges still in service in the world and above all it is one of the two operational bridges in all of Great Britain.
The town of Newport was in 1900 a very popular and often congested port town hence the construction of this transporter bridge which offered an economical solution. Tunneling was technically difficult and expensive, and a conventional bridge required a very long approach ramp to gain enough height to maintain a waterway for the tall ships of the day.
Since 1902 until now it is in service and above all it offers the possibility to the public to be able to climb the 272 steps to reach its summit to admire the superb view of Newport. Those who have vertigo it is better to abstain but what an incredible experience I lived !! The return is made via the carrier.
Et voici un endroit que je vous conseille vivement de faire lorsque il sera de nouveau réouvert après des travaux des rénovation, c'est le Newport Transporter Bridge qui est tout simplement un pont transbordeur qui traverse la rivière Usk à la ville de Newport. Il est parmi les 10 ponts encore en service dans le monde et surtout c'est l'un des deux ponts opérationnels dans toute la Grande-Bretagne.
La ville de Newport était en 1900 un ville portuaire très populaire et souvent encombré d'où la construction de ce pont transbordeur qui offrait une solution économique. Le creusement de tunnels était techniquement difficile et coûteux et un pont conventionnel nécessitait une très longue rampe d'approche pour gagner suffisamment de hauteur pour maintenir une voie navigable pour les grands voiliers de l'époque.
Depuis 1902 jusqu'à maintenant, il est en service et surtout il offre la possibilité au public de pouvoir monter les 272 marches afin d'atteindre son sommet pour en admirer la superbe vue sur Newport. Ceux qui ont le vertige, il vaut mieux s'abstenir mais quelle incroyable expérience j'ai vécu !! Le retour se fait via le transporteur.
